What are the usual working hours??
12 hours (6 am to 6pm)
How many emergency duties per week and describe work if possible?
Emergency duties of 2 weeks at a stretch once in 2 -3 months.
Sunday duties once in 4-5 Sundays.
Emergency duties are usually busy. On an average will have a minimum of 7-10 admissions in the 12 hour shift in the night? Usually get to see complex trauma. Excellent work atmosphere. Will get to see almost ever named fractures and every named procedure. High volume center. No dearth in cases. Biggest blessing is the presence of subspecialty departments. The orthopedic department in the institute has the department of trauma, department of spine surgery, dept. of arthroscopy and sports medicine, dept. of shoulder and upper limb surgery, dept of knee Arthroplasty and department of hip surgery. Every DNB resident gets exposed to myriad number of cases in all these departments. They get posted in these departments on rotation. On an average MIOT does 4500 trauma cases annually , 750 hip arthroplasties including complex revision ones, 1000 knee arthroplasties, 800-900 spine surgeries, 70-100 shoulder And elbow arthroplasties, 500 shoulder elbow wrist and knee arthroscopies. DNB S gets to do quality work here. (Minimal clerical work).

What all surgeries you have performed till now?
Assisted almost all cases named in Campbell (both bony and soft tissue surgeries). A DNB resident gets to do intra-medullary nailing, platings, skeletal traction, arthrotomies, fasciotomies and external fixation. DNB residents are 1st assistants in all complex traumas like pelvic injuries, spine injuries. They are also 1st assistants in all arthroplasty and arthroscopy cases. If the DNB S are interested they even get to do diagnostic arthroscopic evaluation of joints during the residency program .
Are you allowed to touch the patient??
DEFINITELY YES. Starting from taking history, examining the patient in detail, having the right to ask for any investigation that’s warranted. In the regular OPD a DNB resident gets to do bone biopsy, intra-articular injection, joint aspiration in addition to regular slab , cast application.
How are the academics? Any case presentations done?
Academics is excellent. 2 days of exclusive case discussions (minimum 4 case discussion per week). Regular journal club, seminars and lectures. Once every week there will be inter-departmental discussions and presentations. Absolutely no compromise in academics. Every resident does exceptionally well in practical exam as basically it’s Like practical exam every day throughout the duration of residency.
How is the pass rate??
I would say it’s almost 100 percent. Only 1-2 failures amongst 30 candidates in the past 3 years

Super Satisfied!!
Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??
Anaesthesia, radiology ,cardio-thoracic surgery.
Stipend and accommodation details:
No accommodation. Have apartments just adjoining the institute. 2minutes walk to MIOT.
Stipend – The institute is one amongst the highest stipend paying centers in the south – 55000, 60000 and 65000 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year respectively.

Fellowship provided in arthroscopy and sports medicine and also in shoulder and upper limb surgery
