The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a significant expansion in medical education seats, with around 8,000 additional undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats expected to be available in the 2025–26 academic year. Dr. Abhijat Sheth, NMC Chief, shared that ongoing inspections of medical colleges are progressing to facilitate this increase.

Currently, India has 1,18,098 MBBS seats, divided almost equally between government and private institutions. Postgraduate seats total 53,960, with a significant share in both sectors. Although UG seats saw a temporary dip due to a CBI investigation into corruption and regulatory breaches, the overall number of seats is anticipated to rise following thorough inspection and approval.

The NMC has prioritized completing these assessments after recent appointments, including the president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). Dr. Sheth expressed confidence that the increase in seat count will meet the rising demand and improve accessibility to medical education nationwide.

UG NEET counselling is underway, with the second round set to start by August 25, while PG counselling will begin in September, incorporating new seats approved post-inspection.

On the implementation of the National Exit Test (NExT) for final-year MBBS students, Dr. Sheth noted the exam’s innovative nature but stressed the need for consensus among stakeholders. Challenges include standardizing exam difficulty and transitioning from state to centralized exams, alongside addressing student concerns to build confidence in the new system.

Dr. Sheth also highlighted the dual priority of expanding medical colleges and preserving educational quality. NMC is reinforcing accreditation norms covering faculty, infrastructure, and clinical exposure to maintain robust standards. Additionally, NMC promotes a blended “phygital” education model combining physical and digital learning to ensure uniform, competency-based training across institutions.

Efforts to better integrate clinical resources from private and government hospitals aim to enhance medical training quality and opportunities for students. The NMC underscores its commitment to innovation, integration, and effective implementation to transform medical education for India’s healthcare needs.

This development marks a critical step in boosting medical education capacity while ensuring quality, opening up more opportunities for aspiring medical professionals throughout India.
