First Impression : Secondary DNB Anesthesia at RN Cooper Hospital, Mumbai

Edited by Dr Varsha Ukrani

RN Cooper Hospital has been the first choice of candidates for DNB Orthopedics and other branches but this hospital is new when it comes to Secondary DNB Anesthesia which is started in 2017. However, RN Cooper is a complete medical college now providing equivalence with MD Anesthesia. Dr Shubha Damodar Bhat who joined Sec DNB Anesthesia here almost an year back answers some key questions about this place and tells us how it offers a balanced lifestyle (read as proximity to Juhu Beach) which is quintessential in today's fast paced world. If you still have doubts about this hospital you can email her at [email protected]

What was your rank in DNB PDCET?

13 (July 2017)

How many consultants are there in Anesthesia department?

We have 3 consultants.

What are the usual working hours??

Routine OT starts at 8am till usually around 3-4 pm, rarely beyond 4 (if ENT, Ortho and plastic cases). We do PAC s for the coming morning OT after we finish the routine OT. Postings are for 1-1.5 month in ENT, Ortho, Surgery, Gynaec OTs and OPD.

How many emergency duties per week?

We have every 3rd day call system and every 3rd Sunday calls. It comes to around 9-10 calls per month.

We do mostly

-Surgery( minor ot cases like debridement, I& D, amputation,& major Ot cases like obstruction, perforation peritonitis, appendicectomy, strangulated hernia, stab injury, craniotomy, etc) and

-Trauma Ot (Ortho cases like supracondylar #, amputation, Tibia exfix, etc) during emergencies

-Occasionally ENT cases (foreign body bronchus, nasal bone #reduction cases).

Other than that we get

-Intubation/ LP/ IV line / Central line calls

Usually 2-3 people including an SMO or a lecturer attend a case.

Are you allowed to touch the patient??

Of course! Cooper is a Municipal General Hospital. Till now I have given spinal, caudal, epidural, regional blocks, performed intubation (normal and with video laryngoscope) inserted central lines. We get to do fiber optic (A scope) intubations too after a while. We are involved in postoperative ICU Care too. We have done CPCR workshops along for medical students along with our lecturers.

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

Consultants take lecture on case presentations done by residents. Since this is our first primary DNB, secondary DNB and CPS batches, lot of efforts and inputs are put into our academics by our lecturers and consultants to help us with the academics.

How is the pass rate??

As mentioned above our first batch is yet to appear for the exams.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Any other departments good for DNB at your institution?

Stipend and accommodation details:     53k

Accommodation is provided usually to non localites 2-3/room. There is also a separate call room for on call people in the hostel itself for those residents and SMOs who have not been provided one. Our RMO quarters (hostel) are inside the campus itself, bang opposite to the hospital. Hostel fees are included in the yearly college fees.

Any other info you would like to give?

Apart from surgery, OBGYN, Ent, Ortho cases we get to do plastic, neurosurgery and dental cases too once/twice a week. There is no separate pediatric surgery department but we often do pediatric cases in surgery, ENT, and Ortho (circumcision, herniotomy, foreign body bronchus, bronchoscopy, mastoidectomy, CTEV, supracondylar#, DER#) rarely VP shunt meningomyelocoele. For CTVS, CT, MRI and uroplastic experience we have 2 months of observer ship posting in Sion (LTMC, Mumbai).

Why did you choose this hospital?

1. Cooper is in Mumbai where I live. So I get to go home on weekends.

2. This is a teaching hospital

3. Cooper is a Municipal General Hospital with lot of patient load and variety of hands on cases to experience unlike many other corporate DNB institutions.

4. We get to attend CME s and conferences in Anesthesia in Mumbai

5. Juhu beach is hardly 15 min away from the hospital :)

6. Vile Parle/ Andheri are the fashion hub of Mumbai with great entertainment and food options.
