Dr.Shalini Patidar talks about Anesthesia and DDU Hospital , Delhi

Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital was started in 1970 as a 50 Bedded hospital which was extended up to 500 Beds in 1987. Casualty started in 1987 for day time only and with effect from April, 1998 it became functional round the clock. In 2008, trauma block was commissioned which increased the bed strength to 640; emergency services shifted to this new block with expanded emergency room and wards. This hospital is providing specialized services to people of West Delhi and imparting training to Post graduate and under graduate medical students and Para-medicals.

Talking of Anaesthesia in particular, department is really good. There are 7 consultants in total who are very experienced in this field.

Since the hospital is a government hospital, lot of poor patients get admitted here and hence the exposure in Anaesthesia is good. We are allowed to touch the patient unlike other corporate hospitals. Duty hours are like normal junior residents who join here on AD-HOC basis i.e. from 9 am to 4 pm. On emergency days you have a night duty and next day off. You get a very good exposure to cases and i have done almost all procedures except nerve blocks since i have joined in March.

When I joined initially there were no academics and hospital administration kept special classes for seniors before DNB final exam. Now however they have made a roster for us and classes are held according to the roster twice every week on Wednesdays and Saturday. We are made to present cases to consultants so that adds to our academic skills.

Overall the exposure in Anaesthesia is adequate and my seniors passed their exams. The overall pass rate is 100%.

Accommodation is available for DNB residents but its not very good.

Stipend is according to Delhi govt guidelines and NBE guidelines i.e 57k with 8k HRA.
