Candid Talk : DNB General Medicine at Ispat General Hospital, rourkela

DNB General Medicine is always in high demand because DNB is very well known for its clinicals. For the same reason general medicine seats are almost always completely taken at very good ranks and people between 700-1000 ranks often face problems choosing an institute in July Session. Dr Radha Priya faced a similar situation 3 years back before joining General Medicine at Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela. Since then she has  spent three years learning the art of medicine amongst patients at this place and is currently awaiting her theory results. As a token of gratitude she answers few questions to get rid of some common misconceptions about this hospital. If you still have doubts you can call her junior Dr Bharadwaj on 8951358831 .

What was your rank in DNB?

How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty?

What are the usual working hours??

Around 8 hrs per day, morning 8.00am to 1.00pm and  evening  5.00 to 7.30 pm on general shift days . If its B shift then duty from 2pm to 10 pm and you will have someone assisting you from 8 to 10 pm during this shift.

How many emergency duties per week? Can you describe the work?

4 to 6 per month depending on the leaves of others, 4 duties are minimum which last from 8am to 2 pm then 10pm to next morning 8am with a post duty day off. On the off day you have to do duty from 7pm to 10 pm only.

During the night duties, you will be all alone handling a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 14 to 15 admissions during the night apart from the complaints. Consultant on call will be available for any help and ICU staff is approachable for any emergency

Are you allowed to touch the patient??

Lot of free hands on ascetic tap, pleural tap, BM biopsy, liver abscess aspiration, central lines, intubations, peritoneal dialysis etc. You won’t be denied of any procedure that is done here, your free to take decisions and treat.

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

When I was in first and second year we had regular academics but currently they are almost nil. I can assure a case presentation once in a fortnight and it can be done often if the students are interested. There is a reading room in hostel and library is open from 10 am to 10 pm.

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed?

Both my seniors have passed.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??

Anaesthesia, Pathology, OBG are good from what i know. For anesthesia this year 1 primary and 1 secondary have passed theory exam in their first attempt, even  pathology and respiratory medicine residents have passed theory in first attempt. Please contacts residents of respective departments for more detailed information. Don’t expect regular academics in any department as patient load is huge. It’s more of self-learning and experience ultimately.

Stipend and accomodation details:

Its 37k, 39k,40k respectively . we have a hostel and each one gets a three roomed quarter, one has to furnish it all by themselves but its safe and comfortable located2 km from hospital with minimal rent and electricity charges.

Any other info you would like to give?

If really passionate about general medicine, branch specific and have to opt between corporate set ups and this , i would say go for this one. There is no language issue as most of the patients are hindi speaking.

Why did you choose this hospital?

i wanted ONLY general medicine and i had this, chandulal bhilai and few other corporate set ups as my options. I was told this is better than bhilai so opted for it.

Note : The information provided here may change over a period of time eg the stipend may increase over a period of 1-2 years . So Please confirm these details from a resident if the date of publishing of the blog is more than one year old.
