Dr Neha Kwatra talks about OBG & Holy Family hospital,Delhi

Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi is a 326 bedded multi-specialty hospital run by the New Delhi Holy Family Hospital Society and managed by the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese. It is registered as charitable Non-Profit Oraganisation under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Founded by the Medical Mission Sisters in 1953, the vision and values of the Founder- Mother (Dr.) Anna Dengel, are an integral part of the philosophy of this hospital.

"A Caring Attitude" is the hallmark of all the services offered and not just the dignity but also the divinity in a human person is recognized in all our endeavors".

Its been 5 months since I joined OBG at Holy Family Hospital,Delhi and I would say my journey has been good so far.

There are a total 5 consultants in  the OBG department and there are also 3 visiting consultants. There are a total of 6 primary DNBs, 4 secondary DNBs and 3 non academic junior reseidents but  it still feels so less as work load is too much.

Usual duty timing is 8am to 5 pm but Saturdays we have a half day i.e till 2pm. Every week one resident has to do two night duties but there are no post duty offs even on a Sunday, its 33 hours straight. We get all kinds of cases as this is a trust run hospital and all surgeries like transabdominal hysterectomy, transvaginal hysterectomy are done. One of the visiting consultants is a laparoscopic surgeon so we also get a lot of Laparoscopic surgeries including Emergency laps.Hands on is about average , its not as much as a govt college but its sufficient. 5 months into the course I have closed everything beyond uterus. I feel the rest of the hands on we can easily make up for during SRship in a government college.

Academics are good and that’s what sets Holy Family apart from rest of the hospitals. There are 5 classes in a week including a case presentation which is taken up personally by the HOD. She is very helpful in studies. Pass rate is also good as the 4 candidates who appeared last year passed theory in first attempt but only two cleared their practical.

Stipend – 45k

Accomodation – Good enough , located in the campus itself. For food 1000 extra per month.

My rank in jan session was : 1500 , other seat also went around this rank.

Other departments : Our department is the best but Medicine is busy & Surgery too has good cases

Why did I chose Holy family ?

  1. I heard it’s a charitable hospital
  2. There was nothing amongst govt left in Delhi
  3. I felt it was a good option after Stephens and I wasnt wrong :)
