First Impression : DNB OBG at Church Of South India Hospital, Bangalore

OBGY is an evergreen branch in surgical specialty, but many claim it to be hectic for both genders. People who choose OBGY are almost prepared to work at odd hours which they feel is essential for knowing the subject. Perhaps, very few places will provide a moderate work load in OBGY but a good quality exposure with a great learning environment. Dr Jayati Dureja who has recently joined Church of South India hospital says that it fits the bill for being an awesome place to become a Confident OBGY specialist and the moderate workload is infact a blessing in disguise.

What was Your rank in DNB and your colleagues rank in DNB if any:

3651 in Jan 2015

How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty ?

There are 4 consultants here, Including the HOD.Instead of Unit days, the consultants have on-call days fixed amongst themselves.

What are the usual working hours??

8am-5pm. On duty days, one must take a hand over from the duty person of the previous day by reaching 15 minutes early. Duty days can vary from 9-12 a month for first yrs, 5-7 for second yrs, 4-5 for final yrs, per month. Post duty is half day, so that would be 8 am on one day to 2 pm the next day, unless there's a 3 pm class, in which case you have to come back for the class, which is twice a week. Since the hospital is mainly for OBG and PAEDS cases, the DNB seats are in these two subjects only. As far as night duties go, the cases that walk in as emergency can vary from 4-5 a night to 1 or none on a lucky day!

How many emergency duties per week and decribe work if possible.

2-4 depending on the pre-decided schedule, for first yrs. It’s been a month since i joined and i've done and assisted around 4-5 deliveries during the night duty. There is no allocation into labour duty month or gynae or wards etc like in MS/MD colleges. Here, you must handle any and every case that comes up, be in Obs or Gynae. The DNB candidate intake is 1 per session and night duties are alone too ( i had a month of combined duties with seniors to get used to the protocols). In case of any doubts or tough cases, you must inform the Consultant on duty that day, and the case will be managed by their advice or they'll come to handle it.

What all surgeries you have performed till now?

Its still early, but I’ve gone as 2nd assistant for a few LSCS. Independent cases are given by the second and third yr, depending on how well you earn the consultants trust. My seniors have literally held my hand and taught me small procedures...the work environment are beyond my expectations!

Are you allowed to touch the patient?? Please describe the procedures you have done.

Yes, of course. We examine all the patients During OPD and ward rounds. I've been taught Cu-T insertion and removal during OPD, Pap smears etc. The consultants love to teach and take an extra 10 minutes to teach each case that walks in, a luxury we can afford here as the patient load is moderate.

How are the academics? any case presentations done?

Academics are excellent, in fact, at par with medical colleges in the region, which is saying something. We have 3 fixed classes a week, each 1-2 hours long, taught by some of the best/leading OBG consultants in the city/state. Other than that, consultants teach a lot during OPD and Ward rounds. We learn something new each day! The DNB forum along with the classes work on improving our case presentation skills. Maybe the hands on is a little less here compared to Medical colleges, but you'll come out a confident consultant from this place.

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed?

Pass rate is good. Most ppl passed by 2nd pracs, if not first.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Super Satisfied!!

Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??

Paediatrics is the only other DNB here, which is equally good.

Stipend and accomodation details:

25/27/29 k in respective years.

Accomodation is available, but the building is old. However, there’s a lot of PG options within a 3 km radius.

Any other info you would like to give?

If you're getting an OBG DNB in bangalore, take it blindly. The Bangalore Society for OBG is very active and conducts monthly DNB forums for the residents, where all DNB hospitals OBG departments come together to improve our theory answer and practical case presentation skills, along with quizzes and important topics being discussed, journals being distributed.

I'm so impressed with the academics that i'm planning to not attend certain counsellings where I might get MS OBG!

Why did you choose this hospital?

Having done MBBS from KMC Mangalore (Manipal University), i knew the work-academic-hands on balance is good in this state, so Bangalore was high on my list, after my hometown Delhi.

A family friend who's a consultant in OBG in Bangalore also recommended this place over Chinmaya, which was the second option remaining for my counseling day.
