First Impression : DNB Opthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya,Kolkatta

Edited by Dr Varsha ukrani

Sankara Nethralaya has been called " Temple of the eye ". It is one of the best institutes for learning opthalmology in India to the extent that many candidates prefer DNB opthalmology here over MS opthalmology elsewhere purely because the hands on exposure is much better at Sankara. Through its multiple centres across India, it provides comprehensive care for the eye. One such centre has become functional in Kolkata which also started DNB courses in 2017. Dr Ashwin C Somarajan who joined here in 2017 claims he is extremely satisfied with the choice even though this is the first year of the course in this institution. He answers few key questions about this institute and if you still have any queries you can contact him on 9033327171 or mail him at [email protected]

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

Academics are very good. We have good number of classes per week starting from monday morning class, wednesday(glaucoma) and saturday(pediatric) morning journal club along with  4-5 evening online classes from chennai every week. Each month, we are given one topic to be prepared and consultants class on that topic, case presentation by one of the dnbs, as well as theory exam on that topic is conducted. The sessions are good with a lot of grilling sometimes which prepares us well for our DNB finals

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed?

As we are the first batch of SN kolkata, passing rate is yet to be figured out. Only 2 primary and 2 secondary DNBs are currently present.

Super Satisfied!!

Any other info you would like to give?

One of the best institutes in India to pursue ophthalmology considering the clinical, academic as well as surgical experience that you can gain. Each and every department here is keen to give you the best knowledge. If in future fellowship(FMRF) is in you mind, this place would be a good option to get a relatively easy entrance.

Why did you choose this hospital?

1. Sankara Netharalaya has always been one of the top three eye institutes in India. (Tag does matter)

2. As it was the first DNB batch of SN kolkata, had a good feeling of getting special attention as well as good hands on (which turned out true)

3. In SN all are considered equal,(No junior-senior discrimination, even when it comes to fellows)

4. Entrance to fellowship would be relatively easier.
