Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (Deemed to be Univeristy), Prasanthi Nilayam, Andhra Pradesh, India, is a visible manifestation of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s vision of education for human transformation. The institute was recognised as a Deemed to be University by the Government of India in 1981 and  hosts over 1350 undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programme students across four campuses  The uniqueness of SSSIHL is that it provides free education to students for all programmes of study. This includes waiver of all fees - tuition, examinations, laboratory, library, sports and medical. Programmes offered include undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and research.Dr Sayali karande who joined DNB opthalmology here 2 years back says she is satisfied with her choice and answers a few key questions about this place. How many consultants are there in Opthalmology department ?

It is a tertiary care hospital and has specialty services like Cataract, Glaucoma, Retina , Squint, Neuro- ophthalmology, Orbit. 6 permanent consultants along with visiting faculty from PGI Chandigarh, Aravind and abroad.

What are the usual working hours??

8 am - 5.30 pm OPD,OT days twice/ week

How many emergency duties per week?

4 duties / month

What all surgeries you have performed till now?

Surgical training starts after 4-5 months of joining the course. You get SICS, pterygium, DCT, Intra vitreal injections, DCR , Phaco (few cases) and few VR cases ( final yr)

Are you allowed to touch the patient??

Yes. It’s a free tertiary care hospital with NABH accreditation. Every OPD room has a slit lamp and you can examine the patients. You get to do procedures like applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, foreign body removal, SLT, Laser PI ( under supervision).

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

Academics are very good. Morning classes - Tues to Fri , Sat morning - Journal club ,One case presentation every week ( Saturday afternoon).Evening video class with Sankara Nethrayalay , Chennai as per their schedule. 2 periphery postings ( optional ) at LVPEI , Hyd and SN, Chennai for 2 weeks each in second year.

How is the pass rate?? have your seniors passed?

All seniors have passed in first attempt.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Satisfied

DNB Anaesthesia, DNB ortho, DNB CTVS, DNB Cardiology, Urology

Accomodation is provided by the hospital. No tuition fees. (Education / health free of cost).You will learn the local language in 3-4 months.
