Bhilai Steel Plant’s Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) Hospital & Research Center aka Sector 9 Hospital, an 970-bedded high-tech hospital, is the most reputed hospital of this area, which caters to not only Bhilaians but also to the population in the adjoining areas of Bhilai. Equipped with modern diagnostic facilities as CT scan, nuclear medicine etc. the annual OPD attendance in this hospital is over 12 lakhs. Emergency & Trauma care at JLN Hospital has 20 bedded observation unit and is equipped to handle mass scale disasters and plant accidents like carbon monoxide poisoning, road traffic, railway and plant accidents. Super specialty services includes MRI, Spiral CT Scan, Phacoemulsification, Gamma Camera, Doppler, Echocardiography, Laser Photocoagulation, Elisa Reader, Endoscopy, Ultrasound/ Doppler, BERA Unit, EEG/EMG. What are the usual working hours?

8 am to 2 pm usually. Although depending on no. of cases in individual OTs it may extend accordingly.

How many emergency duties per week?

It depends on no. of primary and secondary DNBs.

Right now we are 5 secondary DNBs and 11 primary DNBs that’s why duties are less

Monthly emergency duties are as follows :

1st and 2nd year Primary DNBs usually get 3-4 emergency duties from 2pm-8am (18hrs), whereas 3rd year primary DNBs do 4-5 emergency duties in day shift from 2pm-10pm (8hrs).Secondary DNBs get 6-7 emergency duties in shifts, either day shift from 2pm-10pm (8hrs) or night shift from 10pm-8am (10hrs) which includes 1 Sunday duty. Working conditions are not much hectic.Fully equipped  OTs are there for general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, ENT, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Plastic surgery, Urosurgery.In emergency maximum calls are for LSCS and sometimes surgical laparotomy (3-4 per week). Sometimes foreign body cases of ENT. We get ample time to study on duty days as well.PAC OPD runs parallel in OT complex.

There are 4 months of peripheral postings per year which includes-

-2 months ICU in our institute

-1 month in  Super speciality  wing of Raipur Medical College for pediatric surgery and neurosurgery cases.

-1 month in Cardiothoracic  OT of Ramakrishna Care Super speciality Hospital, Raipur for cardiac surgery cases. Atmosphere of department is very cool and happening.

Are you allowed to touch the patient?

Obviously it is a central government institute. DNB residents get full on free hands. I've performed spinal anaesthesia, epidural catheterization, peripheral nerve blocks using USG guidance and Peripheral nerve stimulator, endotracheal intubations, LMA and I-GEL insertions, central venous catheterization.

How are the academics?

Every Wednesday and Saturday there is presentation on specific topics by DNB residents for which there is a monthly roster.

Written exam on 1st of every month from 9 am to 11 am followed by journal club from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm as there is no routine OT on 1st day due to cleaning work.

Interdepartmental clinical meeting every Wednesday.

Stipend and accommodation  details

1st year- ₹ 53,550

2nd year- ₹ 56,700

3rd year- ₹ 59,220

Accommodation is provided by institute nearby hospital. However married students can opt for 2bhk married accommodation directly from Bhilai steel plant township @ ₹4800/month.

Bhilai is a very clean and green city with peaceful atmosphere.

Why did you choose this hospital?

It is a central Government institute

It is a 970 bedded hospital (my preference was more than 500 bedded hospital)
