On popular demand we are bringing a focused overview of Opthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital & PG Institute , Tirunelveli which has been a pioneer in this field for many years. Many may fear going down south for PG but according to Dr Ashish Badgujar the institute offers a fine combination of  excellent exposure and academics in Opthalmology which may not be found elsewhere. The institute may suit those who are living in and around Tamil nadu or those who are passionate about Opthalmology as a specialty.

What was Your rank in DNB and your colleagues rank in DNB if any?

June 2015 session 508, my batch mates had 141 & 1050 ranks.

How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty?

It is a tertiary eye care centre. So all the speciality services like Glaucoma, IOL, Retina, Cornea, Neuro-ophthal, Paediatric & squint, Orbit are present.

Every department has a head of the unit, consultants & fellows. In all there are around 50 consultants & fellows.

What are the usual working hours??

OPD hours from 7.30am to 6.00 PM with 1hour lunch break & coffee breaks.

1-2 OT turn per week.

How many emergency duties do you have per week ?

Emergency duties get divided between all the fellows & DNB students. So monthly 3-4 night duties.

If it’s a surgical branch then what all surgeries you have performed till now?

I have done 27 SICS till now as Surgery training starts after 5-6 months of joining. Mostly you get SICS , DCT, I&d with phaco only limited no (5) towards the end of your course.

Are you allowed to touch the patient?? Please describe the procedures you have done:            

Yes. You can examine the patients on slit lamp. I have done OPD procedures like applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, foreign body removal etc

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

Academics are very good. Morning classes from Tue to Fri  with One case presentation every week.

Monday master class in the evening

Thursday grand rounds in the evening.

For master class & grand rounds all the Aravind centres are connected online.

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed?

All my seniors have passed in the first attempt.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Satisfied

Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??

No other departments in the hospital.

Stipend and accommodation details:

Stipend 25k in 1st yr 27 k in 2nd & 29k in 3rd.

Accommodation- hostel is there in the campus. 1000 Rs/ month

Mess 3000/month (compulsory if u stay in the hostel)

+ electricity bill & maintenance

Any other info you would like to give?

Language barrier is not a big issue as you learn the ophthal  related Tamil in 2-3 months...

Why did you choose this hospital?

1) I was interested in ophthal & this was the best available @ my rank
