Overview : DNB General surgery at Lourdes hospital,Kochi

Coming all the way from North India to study in a South Indian institute is not easy for anybody. Despite the barriers many have taken the risk and chosen the road not taken before. How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty?

There are 3 senior consultants and 2 junior consultants.

What are the usual working hours??

We will be free mostly  by approx 4pm , sometimes by 6 pm .

How many emergency duties per week?

2/3 per week in alternate week in first year, 1 per week in second year. We have to attend two OPDs in a week, remaining five days  we will be in OT. Our HOD is expert in thyroid,  head neck, and GI surgery. A large number of Thyroid and oral carcinoma, you will get to assist. I have assisted more than thousand thyroid over the past  one and half year. He does surgery including breast reconstruction( TRAM), oncosurgery for GI malignancy, parotid, Thoracotomy as well. Other consultant is a vascular surgeon, so we have assisted peripheral angioplasty, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, femoropopliteal bypass graft, AV fistula creation as well. Another consultant is bariatric surgeon, so we  have assisted few gastric bypass surgery also. Overall i have seen a variety of cases in the past year.

If it’s a surgical branch then what all surgeries you have performed till now?

Hand on is less as compared to govt hospital but you will do fasciotomy, small amputation, I and D and cyst excision, Split-thickness skin graft like procedure in first year. In second and third year, amount of hands on depends on your performance.

Are you allowed to touch the patient??

Yes we are allowed to touch the patient. We do take decisions regarding surgery, patients in casualty and in emergency. I have myself done skin graft, limb amputation, fasciotomy, open appendicectomy.  We have super-specialty posting also like in Neuro, CTVS, URO, and Plastic.

How are the academics?

Few case presentations and discussions do happen.  Daily morning rounds time , questions are asked but mostly  you have to study yourself like many other DNB hospitals

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed?

Pass rate is very good. My all senior are passed in regular session. One is going for exam now.

Very satisfied

43/44/45K in respective years, accommodation in hostel nearby,  Its liveable.

Any other info you would like to give?

This hospital is very good as we have cathlab, CT, MRI etc  and a dedicated renal transplant center.

Why did you choose this hospital?

Frankly speaking, being a north Indian, it was a very tough decision to come here. But people told me that you should opt this hospital because the surgery faculty is very good. After coming here, I found that true in terms of his performance without any complication.
