Overview : DNB Orthopaedics at Indra gandhi Govt General hospital and PGI, Pondicherry

For surgical branches like orthopaedics , government and trust run hospitals are always better than big corporate hospitals of the metros. These places give ample hands on training which is absolutely must for a surgeon or an orthopaedician. Indira gandhi Govt general hospital and Post graduate institute is a shining example of one such institute. Dr Arun Singh who is a DNB Resident in Orthopaedics there says that many medical colleges don't have such good hands on training as this place. He answers some important questions about the place and if you still have any doubts you can call him at 7094122789.

What was your rank in DNB and your colleagues rank in DNB if any?

1200 and 1600

How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty?

4 consultants, 2SRs and 2 contract specialists

What are the usual working hours??

8hours daily from 7.30 to2pm.  On duty days resident has stay for whole night in hospital

Work load is like a medical college as its a tertiary care centre

How many emergency duties per week ? how hectic are they?

Emergency duties are kind of hectic but being in Ortho one should not ask this question, Duties are the best thing to do if you want to learn. Best thing is nursing staff is very punctual and good in skills. Till date being a first year I have not done any sampling or given any drug. Para medical staff is quiet efficient , they do everything you ask for right  from taking samples to collecting report  and shifting patients. Only work you have to do is to what a doctor has to do.

If it’s a surgical branch then what all surgeries you have performed till now?

All surgeries are done here but Trauma is the backbone of department. We have 2 OT tables, C-arms and mobile X ray units. CT and MRI are also available in hospital free of cost.

So far i have done:

Limb correction surgeries, plastic surgeries, Ssg, Skin grafts, BM infusions, Deformity correction, Emergency OTs, Bone cement, K wire procedures etc. You will get hands on every case.

Are you allowed to touch the patient??

Everything is done by PGs only as it’s a govt hospital setup. You are the only one to do things. Superb case load and hands on. In my first year itself i have done a lot of OT procedures skin to skin.

How are the academics? any case presentations done?

Academics consists of daily 2hr classes which consist of  PPT presentations ,case presentation , X ray and MRI discussions .We are also allowed to attend CMEs and teaching programmes.

How is the pass rate??

75 percent as one gets only 3 duties per month and all you come to hospital is for OT only, so you will get lots of time to study.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Super Satisfied!

Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??

Surgery is also superb. In Radio diagnosis they have MRI 128slice and CT which are free of cost so patient load is good. Medicine and ophthalmology departments are also good from what i know. Please contact a resident from respective departments to confirm this.

Stipend and accommodation details:

40k, 41k, 42k in Respective years. Accommodation is available for girls only.

Any other info you would like to give?

Language is not that big a problem as we think because in orthopaedics we just have to ask a few questions regarding history. So don’t miss such a good institute for this reason as you won’t get so much hands on in orthopaedics in many medical colleges

Why did you choose this hospital?

First thing it is a govt setup with full free hand.

Second because it has superb case load, fully equipped and all facilities

Third I wanted orthopaedics only

Note : The information provided here may change over a period of time eg the stipend may increase over a period of 1-2 years . So Please confirm these details from a resident if the date of publishing of the blog is more than one year old.
