Unknowingly Awesome : DNB Obstetrics & Gynecology at District Hospital, Howrah

Blog Submitted Via Website Link

The District Hospitals of West Bengal raised many eyebrows in last years July Session councelling, no body knew about them if they were good or bad as they were a new addition to the seat matrix. These Hospitals were ignored by many aspirants as no info could be found about  these places. From our recent post , it is known to us that Govt Plans to establish learning centres at district hospitals and these things were already in motion from a long time. District Hospital, Howrah was one such place and has been part of the elaborate plan to increase DNB seats . Dr Suchismita Chowdhury took the risk of choosing DNB OBG at  this hospital over many other places simply because its a Govt Hospital & Hands on is absolutely necesarry for learning in any Surgical branch. She has answered a few question about this awesome place to tell you whats unknown & unheard before.

What was Your rank in DNB and your colleagues rank in DNB if any?

1280 in July Session

How many consultants are there in your department in the concerned specialty?

6-7 consultants are there.

What are the usual working hours??

2 admission days per week that is of 24-30hrs initially and rest of the days 9-4pm. Then 1 admission day per week again, it depends upon the consultant under whom you will be posted.

How many emergency duties per week?

Admission days are considered as emergency duties only.

If its a surgical branch then what all surgeries you have performed till now?

Per day there is an average of 20-30 normal deliveries and 10-12 caeserian sections. Since its a district hospital cases are referred here from other small hospitals also Total abdominal hysterectomy, vaginal hysterectomy & laparotomy are routinely done. Laparoscopic OTs done on Mondays, generally all basic OTs are done with loads of free hands. It’s a government institute so patient load is good and the consultants are very liberal about giving cases to us. I have done many caesarean sections, abdominal hysterectomy and other basic OTs. Once a week we are allowed to go to Medical College,Kolkata. We are also posted there in one unit and we can attend OT,OPD,academics there also.

Are you allowed to touch the patient ??

It’s a government institute and we are allowed to do all the procedures by ourselves.

How are the academics? Any case presentations done?

Academics are ok but not as such regular class. The consultants here are very supportive and we are allowed to attend the CMEs all over  India and other lectures in Calcutta medical college academics too.

How is the pass rate?? Have your seniors passed.

I am the first batch.

How satisfied are you with your choice?

Super Satisfied!!

Any other departments at your institution good for DNB??

There are DNB Internal Medicine, DNB Pediatrics and DNB Surgery. Please talk to Resident from respective Department for more details.

Stipend and accomodation details

28k for 1st year....30k for 2nd yr....32k for 3rd year (approxinately) which is equivalent to WB state government stipend

Any other info you would like to give?

District hospital,Howrah ,West Bengal is just 5mins from Howrah Railway station..surrounded by Howrah Court and Howrah Police station. The hospital is just 15mins away from kolkata and it just takes 30mins to reach Calcutta Medical College. It is officially a 700 bedded hospital and unofficially running 900 beds, constisting of officially 70 beds for post natal patient 8 beds for antenatal 2 beds for eclampsia patients and 10 beds for Gynae patients...but unofficially there will be more than 100 post natal mothers 25-30 antenatal

Why did you choose this hospital?

Last year I was the first one to take a seat in d district hospitals..Though there were other institutes available at my rank still I chose this institute and I think I am indeed blessed to get this institute, I have realized gradually. I chose this because..

1. Very close to Kolkata

2.A government institute which is Annexed with Calcutta Medical College, where we can easily go and learn

3. Very good exposure, loads of bread and butter cases!

If you all are seeking  awesome work exposure and free hand then this hospital should top the list,  Its nothing less than any Govt. Institite and academics we will definitely get it done. For studies we need a little bit of guidance and rest we all know we have to study ourselves but free hand..Exposure is not what we get everywhere! It is in These 3years of post graduation you need to do as many basic cases u can!

All the Best...:)
