Dr Satarupa paul talks about OBG at M.R Bangur hospital,Kolkatta

MR Bangur Hospital, an ISO 9001:2008 certified Government Hospital, is the district hospital of South 24 Parganas. It serves the massive population of the district as well as the adjoining metropolitan area. The various clinics in the OPD serves around 1200 – 1500 patients per day and around 150 patients are admitted daily to be dispensed medical attention of various nature. The hospital is currently equipped to serve patients in 650 beds with new facilities being added each day.

When it comes to OBG department per say , the department has 6 consultants who have OPD from on one day from Monday to Saturday and Sunday by rotation. There are 10 Post graduate trainees in our hospital and the work gets equally divided amongst ourselves. The weekly duties consist of the following things.

  1. 24 hour on call
  2. One labour room duty of 12 hours
  3. Antenatal outdoor once a week
  4. Gynaec OPD on your admission day
  5. One  general emergency duty of 7 hours
  6. One day major O.T

Morning and evening rounds are compulsory everyday.

The focus is maily on Obstetric cases rather than gynecology. Obstetric cases are many and usually include

  1. Retained placenta
  2. Preterm delivery
  3. Abruptly,rupture uterus
  4. Abdominal pregnancy
  5. Post partum Hemorrage

Overall the exposure is good and there you get a lot of hands on experience in surgery. There are ample patients as this a government hospital so a lot of poor people also visit this hospital. Hence the cutting chances are very good for us. We are allowed to touch the patient unlike big corporate hospitals. Its been 4 months since i have joined this hospital and i would say iam pretty satisfied with what i have and i would say its good place to pick up a seat for surgical branch.

As for academics they are about average . We have classes for PG trainees once a week.Seminars/conferences are also held occasionally. We have a well equipped library in our hospital and we also have a written permission to access SSKM hospital & medical college Library. The overall pass percentage in OBG is good here, the exam batch this year have passed their theory exam and are awaiting practical dates.

My rank was – 2802 (Jan session)

Accommodation - Boys hostel is provided but if someone is a localite they tell you to get your own accommodation so paying hostel fee is optional. For girls there is no accommodation and I m still struggling for an accommodation.

Stipend -   27,28 and 31k for respective years. This is the state government stipend.

I chose this hospital because

  1. I was told government setup is good for surgical branches
  2. I wanted to do OBG for which it was good.
  3. Patient load is good and its the patient who  teach you everything
